Asheville Municipal Golf Course “The Muni”

I’ve played the Muni many times over the years and sadly the front nine was wiped out by Hurricane Helene. As of Spring 2026 work to repair the front has not begun yet. It’s such a shame as they spent a lot of money to improve the front nine.

The Muni has a long history as a public golf course. It was designed by Donald Ross in 1927. Ross designed 46 courses in NC including Pinehurst and many more in the US and Canada. The Muni was established as a working man’s course and Blacks were only allowed to play on Mondays “ Caddies day” until 1954 when desegregation laws changed that. Blacks were still given a hard time but that has ended. I met Harry Jeter there and at 80 he’s still a good player . Harry is in the Black golfers Hall of Fame and a great guy to play with and talk to. In 1927 it cost .50 cents to play a round. LOL

The Skyview classic started in 1960 as a Black golfers tournament and has a long list of winners. The next year it was opened to all as the hosts felt they were excluding people. The very thing they fought for for years.

Theres a documentary on you tube about the Muni by Paul Bonesteel. Worth a watch.

Sure hope Asheville gets the money to fix The Muni up and open the front nine soon! HITUM
